Obviously after reading my last several posts, you know that I have a deep and profound love of Reader's Workshop. If you are teaching your own kiddos at home or have a classroom full, you know that you are in charge of deciding "how" your students learn to become better readers. But what do the kiddos think about it? What do they like about Reader's Workshop? or not like? I think it is always good to keep their perspective in mind as we plan our days. Ultimately we have to decide what's best for our learners, but as we all know.....our students learn so much more when they enjoy what they are doing. I decided to let my learners tell you what THEY think of Reader's Workshop themselves. Out of the mouths of babes, right? I asked my kiddos 3 simple questions and let them come up with their responses. My daughter did write down her answers first because she was so afraid that she would forget what she wanted to say:) She loves being in front of the camera (she DOES NOT get that from me). My son, on the other hand is quite the perfectionist (I DO know where he gets that) and after 3 video takes, was frustrated that he couldn't get his answers out the way he wanted to, so decided to write down his responses so that I could share them with you instead. My son's responses were as follows:
1. What do you think of Reader's Workshop? "I think it makes you a better reader because you get the chance to read. I enjoy reading, but some people don't. Reader's Workshop helps you have a chance to actually read." 2. What do you like most about Reader's Workshop? "I like the 5 minutes of silent reading because I get to go to a comfortable spot and settle into reading before my conference." 3. Do you think it helps you become a better reader? Why or why not? "It does help you become a better reader because you get to read for the entire time. I also like having a conference. I read to myself really well and during conference I get to read aloud to my mom. I'm working on getting better at that. At conference time, I get to practice that." My kiddos seem to get it. They realize that to get better at something, you have to spend time actually doing it. They have had times in their lives where they were reluctant readers and it's awesome to see them truly love to read. They discuss their books, their eager to tell each other about their favorite parts and have even swapped books that they've each read. Reader's Workshop for the win!
